Ngilu to be summoned over land

The Committee on Lands in the National Assembly plans to summon Lands Cabinet Secretary Charity Ngilu over the alleged grabbing of Sh8 billion land in Karen.

The committee met yesterday at Parliament Buildings. There are claims that Jubilee MPs and high-ranking government officials are some of the beneficiaries of the disputed property.

A source at the meeting said some committee members are concerned about claims that they have been allocated plots to keep quite over the matter.

“The meeting was a full House and we are concerned with what is happening in Karen,” Kieni MP Kanini Kega said. The committee resolved to summon Ngilu next Thursday after a visit to the land on Tuesday.

“We have also summoned any other person who will assist the committee in getting to the bottom of the matter,” Kega said. Members were concerned about reports that 40 of their colleagues are among government officials and politicians believed to have benefited from the property.

Court documents indicate the 134-acre prime land has been sub-divided into 189 plots. Also to be summoned are the editors of the media house that published the story.
